There is a massively growing body of evidence that people around the world would have better health and lower incidences of diseases such as cancer, thyroid problems and fibrocystic breast issues if they only knew to consume sufficient biologically USABLE iodine.

Today, the foods that we eat are bereft of iodine. A hundred and twenty-nine countries’ soils are profoundly iodine deficient. A third of the world’s population live in iodine deficient areas and mortality rates are 50% higher in these areas. Note this is only a mortality statistic and doesn’t take into account the diseases and suffering that many of these people have to go through.

The World Health Organization states that over 93% of the world population is deficient in Iodine. The CDC states that iodine deficiency is one of the four major deficiency diseases in the world. In a study of 4,000 patients 96% were found to be Iodine deficient and this trend is worsening by the day.

Over the last 30 years iodine levels have dropped 50% in the USA alone. There are two reasons for iodine deficiencies: one of them as highlighted is inadequate intake. The second is exposure to substances in our bodies that displace iodine called toxic halides.

In short, we have a serious halogen excess accumulating in our systems and competing with iodine for “cell receptor attention”. By halogens, we are particularly referring to chlorine, fluorine and bromine – those in the same group as iodine. It’s amazing how much halogens are lurking everywhere – from household products, environmental pollutions, pesticides in our foods, to especially our water supply, toothpaste, processed baked goods and more.

Each time someone takes a hot shower, they are literally getting a mega-dose chlorine or fluoride gas attack and inhaling a lot of these halogens and absorbing them through our skin as well! Compound that with eating lots of bakery products, breads and pastas, drinking municipal and/or tap water, and fluoride toothpastes – and you have a recipe for definite iodine deficiency!

There is absolutely no doubt – iodine deficiency is a global epidemic.

Brief History of Iodine

Iodine has an important and little understood history. This relatively scarce element has played a pivotal role in the formation of our planet’s atmosphere and in the evolution of life. For more than two billion years there was no oxygen in the atmosphere until a new kind of bacteria, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), began producing oxygen as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Cyanobacteria also developed an affinity for iodine. The hypothesis is that these organisms used iodine as an antioxidant to protect themselves against the free radicals that oxygen breeds (superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radical).

Studying kelp, researchers have shown how iodine does this and have found that kelp will absorb increased amounts of iodine when placed under oxidative stress. Other researchers have shown that iodine increases the antioxidant status of human serum similar to that of vitamin C.

Iodine and Health

17936Not having sufficient levels of iodine is like running a car without oil. This is precisely because it is required by every cell, organ and system in the human body. Let’s take a deeper look into certain standout health benefits of iodine consumption.

Thyroid

The thyroid is the most negatively charged pole in the body and heavily vascularised – hence attracting positively charged ions which are generally toxic to the body including oil particles, pesticide particles, heavy metals, chemicals of all kinds and especially radioactive substances.

The height of the ‘Industrial Age’ (early 1900’s) was the beginning of radiation residue and since then the atmosphere, water shed and ground water supplies have not been the same again. This is of course not a sudden problem but instead building for generations as a result of the compounding effects of BOTH environmental phenomena (volcanic eruptions being one) and industrial waste/after effects.

The world’s humanity has seen a steady increase in radiation levels, both environmental and man-made, for well over a century now. RDA – Really Dumb Assumptions?

The RDA, which stands for Recommended Dietary Allowances, are recommended dosages given for various nutrients which are really very loosely researched figures as no two persons are the same. We have found out today that some of the RDA values for nutrients like Magnesium, Iodine and MSM are so low that it has to be deliberate – it can’t be derived with the intent to effect healing on the human population.

Research today has shown that 12.5 mgs of iodine is the minimum daily requirement for full body iodine sufficiency. Testing has further demonstrated that this dosage does not remove existing bromine and fluoride from the body. The loading dosage of at least 20 mgs is required to begin the process of iodine dislodging these toxic halogens.
These factors are bringing the current RDA levels (about 150 mcg) for daily iodine intake into serious question. First, is the history upon which the original iodine RDA levels were based. When it was established that iodine needed to be supplemented into the daily diet the next step was to ascertain what the RDA level would be for the general population. This means a study taking a cross section of a generally healthy population would be required.

In the early 1900’s a landmark clinical run study was initiated by government and science to ascertain the maximum safe daily intake of iodine. During the study’s early phase all of the participants experienced good results from the iodine intake protocols. However, part way through the study one of the participants suddenly died of a cardio incident. This frightened the researchers who attributed her death to too high iodine intake during the study. It was an erroneous assumption which led to the immediate termination of the study and the chief scientist rashly set a highly subjectively and arbitrarily low RDA level for iodine, many times lower than the researchers had originally thought it would be.

A thorough investigation of this study shows that it was flawed from the beginning. The woman who had died from the too high iodine intake should not have been part of the study as she had already had experienced two life threatening cardio events prior to her participating in the iodine intake study. Her being included in the study was totally counter to the study’s standard that participants were supposed to be representative of a ‘healthy’ segment of the general population.

Sadly, that study, so essential to health and well-being of the population, has never been redone according to sound scientific protocol for accurately ascertaining optimal RDA levels, and so the woefully low RDA level for iodine continues to be based on a flawed interpretation of a badly crafted and executed study, done by ‘scientists’ no less!


Which Form of Iodine is the Best?

Of course, the long-term goal is to consume sufficient food-based sources such as sea vegetables e.g. kelp. These are how “iodine-rich” countries even prevent themselves from being deficient – through their food. However, for people who already have manifestations of iodine deficiency symptoms, and want to correct their problems – using food alone might prove too slow and fail to provide therapeutic effect.

Naturally, one would consider iodine supplementation at this point as it is also not easy to find iodine-rich foods in a typical modern diet. Whilst there are a number of choices for iodine supplementation, many do not deliver on their benefit because they are not bioavailable and readily usable by the body. This is an important point as unless your body is using the iodine on a cellular level, the effects will be diminished and you might misjudge iodine to be ineffective. It’s simply the way it is being delivered that is ineffective. This is especially crucial for pregnant women to note as they require double the amount of iodine!

Here are some of the common forms of iodine supplements commonly found on the market:

  1. Potassium Iodide – Often less than 20% absorbable as it forms very strong bonds and not easily separable for bio-chemical use in the body.
  2. Lugol’s Solution – A mixture of elemental iodine and potassium iodide, creating iodine/iodide matrices which are better than plain potassium iodide, but not much better.
  3. Nascent Iodine – A superior form of monatomic iodine but not necessarily naturally derived, non-toxic, and non-stinging. Many are in alcohol bases or simply glycerated at the end after processing with other dissolvents, which affects the integrity of the solution.
